If you are looking for some inspiration for your next BBQ, follow these 4 simple steps to make Vegan Satay (Malaysian Style). Full of flavour, these Vegan Satay skewers are tasty for both vegans and non-vegans. The Vegan Satay’s are a good appetizer or for a main with sweet potato fries or rice! With this Malaysian twist to the satay it will be packed with authenticity and the bonus is… its super easy to make!


  • 2 large King Oyster Mushroom
  • 2 pinches Salt
  • 250g Mock meat / seitan
  • 2 tablespoon Mak Tok's Rendang Chilli Paste


  • 1/2 Cucumber (sliced)
  • 1 whole Red Onion (sliced)
  • 1 jar Mak Tok's Satay Chilli Paste (for dipping)


1) Slice the king oyster mushrooms to approximately 1.5cm thickness.

2) Marinade mushroom and mock meat with Mak Tok’s Rendang Chilli Paste and season with salt. Let it sit for 5 minutes.

3) Skewer the mushroom and mock meat.

4) BBQ until golden brown. To serve, slice the cucumber and red onion, then dip and enjoy with Mak Tok’s Satay Chilli Paste.

Top tip: tempeh and tofu work equally as well.

Top tip: If you can’t find king oyster mushrooms, button mushrooms are fine.
